Equine Chiropractic at Giulia’s Chiropractic

Whether you have a Thoroughbred, Shetland, Exmoor or another breed of horse, our equine chiropractor Giulia may be able to help your horse perform at their best and without pain.

For Giulia, horse riding and competition and horses have always been her passion since she was very young. She also competed in events at a high level, including being a part of the Italian team. “I’ve competed three times in the European Championships so it’s always kind of been in my DNA,” she said.

What Is Chiropractic for Horses?

The principles of equine chiropractic are the same as they are for humans. “Chiropractic is concerned with, and especially capable of, solving neuromuscular biomechanical injuries-places where the joints of the spine are abnormally restricted, not moving through their normal range of motion. It looks normal and, to some extent, may feel normal, but it’s not aligned and not moving as it should,” said Dr. Art Ortenburger, associate professor of Large Animal Surgery & Integrative Medicine at the Atlantic Veterinary College in Charlottetown, P.E.I.

The types of patients that are attracted to our clinic are those that work with horses, have horses or ride horses. One of the biggest reasons why people call for equine chiropractic is to alleviate low back problems for their riding.

Benefits for Horses

Horses that receive chiropractic care are more comfortable and in less pain and can perform better. Equine chiropractic can address gait changes, girthiness, stiffness, behavioural changes, sensitivity to touch, disobedience and more. We also see horses that are reluctant to go forward.

Benefits for Riders

After their horse receives chiropractic care, a person often finds that they can sit on the saddle-that they can sit on the horse much more symmetrically than they used to.

Fortunately, horses don’t need an intense program of care as people do. After Giulia sees a horse for the first time she then likes to see them two weeks later to see how they’re doing after their adjustment. After that, she typically develops a program depending on how much they do. Here are three types of care that we can provide:

Horses participating in intense sport

If your horse participates in intense sport and competes often, we normally recommend them to have a treatment every six weeks as a kind of a maintenance program.

Horses being ridden for leisure

For horses that are predominantly ridden for leisure then a treatment every 3-6 months is ideal. It just depends on how problematic they are.

Routine checkups

Just as people can benefit from getting chiropractic checkups on a regular basis, horses also can benefit from getting checked every 3-6 months.

The benefit of seeing Giulia for care is she can treat both the rider and their horse. “It is very important to see both the horse and the rider because often they can create problems for each other with issues such as compensation and asymmetry,” she said. According to Giulia, if you just treat the horse and the rider is still asymmetrical and sitting on the horse in the wrong way that can negatively impact the horse again.

The same issues will recur. That’s why Giulia likes to adjust the rider to ensure they’re symmetrical.
